Golf has been part of the alphabet since its original 1951 draft and was never one of the five words revised in the final 1956 standard. Its maritime flag, hoisted by itself, carries a practical, specific request: "I want a pilot" — asking for a harbor pilot to come aboard and guide the vessel into port.
Unlike some of its alphabet neighbors, Golf's pronunciation carries no special ICAO stress guidance or alternate reading — it's said exactly the way the sport's name is said in ordinary English, which is part of why it's rarely a source of confusion for new learners.
