Reference Systems
Ten full system reference hubs, each covering one code, alphabet, or signalling system end to end: what it is, where it came from, the complete chart, and how it's actually used today. These are the deep-dive pages behind the individual letter and character entries — read one of these first if you want the whole picture of a system before drilling into a specific letter.
The Ten Systems
- International Morse Code — the full dot-and-dash system used in radio, signalling and Morse practice worldwide.
- NATO Phonetic Alphabet — the standard spelling alphabet used in aviation, maritime and military radio.
- Braille Alphabet — the tactile reading and writing system for blind and low-vision readers.
- Binary & ASCII — how computers represent text as sequences of 0s and 1s.
- Semaphore — flag-based visual signalling, historically used ship-to-ship and along railways.
- Maritime Signal Flags — the flag code ships use to communicate at a distance without radio.
- Tap Code — a simple grid-based system historically used by prisoners to communicate through walls.
- Pigpen Cipher — a geometric substitution cipher, common in puzzles and historical correspondence.
- Caesar Cipher — the ancient shift cipher, still the standard first cipher taught in cryptography.
- Hexadecimal — the base-16 number system used throughout computing.
How These Pages Are Organized
Each system reference hub follows roughly the same shape — what the system is, a short account of where it actually came from, the full chart, and where it's genuinely still used today — but the content itself is written specifically for that system rather than a fill-in-the-blank template with the nouns swapped. A page about semaphore flags and a page about hexadecimal have almost nothing in common except the section headings; the substance underneath is entirely different because the two systems are entirely different.
Reference Hubs vs. Individual Character Pages
These ten hub pages cover a whole system end to end. If you only need one specific letter or digit rather than the full picture, the Morse and NATO sections have individual per-character pages that go even deeper on that one entry specifically, including memory aids and closely related characters. Think of the hub as the textbook chapter and the character page as the glossary entry — both are accurate, but they're built to answer differently-sized questions, and reading the hub first usually makes each individual character page, further down the site, make a great deal more sense once you get there.
