India holds a distinction none of the alphabet's other 25 words share: it's the only entry that is also the literal name of a sovereign country. Quebec names a Canadian province rather than a nation, and Zulu names a people and historical kingdom rather than a modern state. It also needs no pronunciation guidance at all, since the country's own English name and the phonetic alphabet's word are simply identical, letter for letter.

Its maritime signal flag, hoisted alone, tells other ships "I am altering course to port" — the direct counterpart to Echo's "altering course to starboard," the two flags forming a matched pair of directional signals a few letters apart in the alphabet.

That country-name status never caused ICAO any trouble during testing, which is worth noting given how carefully the 1950s revision scrutinized every word for confusion risk: the alphabet was built as a deliberately apolitical technical standard, and India passed through unrevised alongside words with no national meaning at all.
